i'm pretty sure Mike's Mic said this in one of his recap videos, but tv shows from the early 2000s-2010s, especially the ones with 20+ episodes a season, were never meant to be binged in the way we do now. we were meant to watch the episode, wait a week, and watch the next one. we weren't supposed to pick up on every little detail and realize that so many things become plotholes, like who tf did Spencer see in Alison's window in that first episode? we never find out! i'm probably not going to be able to pick up on every single plothole in this show, because there are like millions. i'm just here to enjoy the ride, not nitpick!
this show is probably most popular for having the most unbelievably tea outfits of all time. Spencer has always been my favorite, but even now as an adult i'm so gagged by her style. sure, she's kind of insane, but the girl can dress! Aria, too, as much as I cannot stand her.
of course the song choices in the episodes are so nostalgic, and it makes me realize how shows now feel cheap and ugly because we abandoned warm lighting and dark wood tones. bring that back! make shows feel dark and moody! netflix lighting has truly killed visual appeal in both movies and tv, but i feel like we still have time to learn from our mistakes. also, more flip phones. i don't care if it's unrealistic. they always look so much better than iphones on the screen.
the one thing i love about this show, and let me know if you agree, is how they make all the girls deal with all of these insane things A puts them through, solving all these mysteries to figure out what happened to Alison and figure out if she's actually still alive, when Alison was literally a demonic entity in their lives. genuinely there has never been a worse friend on television. personally, if i was her friend and she went missing, i'd be throwing parties and screaming "FREEDOM" from the rooftops. inserting herself into everyone's business and calling her friends fat? BYE! it's kind of crazy that that's the most unrealistic part of the show to me, that these girls would actually mourn her, but alas.
i'll end this first entry by saying: i still can't believe they made ezra and aria happen. not only is he a weird pervert but they also made her the one to push so hard for their relationship as if that somehow makes it LESS creepy??? literal jail to everyone involved. when i was 9 watching this show as it was coming out, i thought my dad was so strict for not wanting me to watch it. now, as a 24 year old, i realize that he was actually way too lenient and he should've FORCED me not to watch it. sorry, dad! i still love it, but it was definitely not for my little 9 year old eyes!
that's all i have for now. i'm about 5 episodes in so far, and my jaw has dropped far too many times. stay tuned!
(p.s. Detective Wilden doesn't die soon enough...)
